It Came From the Indies – Alec Gillis and Harbinger Down

harbinger_down_2Alec Gillis and Tom Woodruff Jr. co-founded Amalgamated Dynamics Inc. which rose to prominence as one of the great practical effects studios in the world. As well as being the team responsible for H.R. Giger’s Xenomorph from Alien 3 onward their filmography runs the gamut from The Santa Clause to Starship Troopers, Grown Ups 2 to Tremors. As mainstream film looked increasingly to computer-generated effects as the be-all end-all Alec and Tom sensed that there was still an audience for their trade: real and tangible special effects makeup and effects that came to such prominence in the 1980’s. Tom Woodruff Jr. Went on to direct Fire City Interpreter of Signs while Alec Gillis would direct HARBINGER DOWN. While Fire City is more of a thriller with monsters than it is a horror film, Harbinger Down shares more similarities with sci-fi horror of the 80’s and early 90’s such as The Thing and Leviathan. Martin talks with Alec at length about the development of special effects over the last 30 years, the founding of ADI, crowd funding, and of course his directorial debut Harbinger Down. Check out the trailer for Harbinger Down after the break and do check out the ADI Youtube channel for tons of behind the scenes footage on a bunch of their different projects.
